Stamps Aren’t Cool Episode 5: Stamps in France!

The latest episode has dropped of everybody’s favourite stamp collecting podcast, Stamps Aren’t Cool!

And when I say ‘latest’, I mean, really late. This is the second of two episodes that we recorded in 2023, that we’ve finally got around to editing. Note to selves: make less ambitious podcast episodes that don’t take so much time in post-production.

If you’re new to this blog, the podcast is some dumb fun that my wife and I have concocted together. As in our real lives, I’m the stamp collector who just wants to be understood, and she speaks for the normal people who have to deal with us. Hopefully it’s fun to listen to, regardless of whether you are into the hobby.

This episode has probably been the one that has been the most fun in the making, because it DEMANDED that we go to France for a holiday. These are the sacrifices that we’re prepared to make for you.

Normally, the prospect of hearing a loved-up couple talk about their fabulous overseas trip would rightly fill anyone with dread. That’s because most people’s travel stories lack the critical element of stamp collecting. Luckily, this podcast has lots of it! There’s some reminiscing about those moments on our trip when I got to indulge in being a philatelist abroad. I introduce Celeste to my Travel Collection, a sideline that I maintain which has been inspired by our adventures around the world. And, with France having now qualified for inclusion, I show off some recent additions. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you listen carefully, you’ll detect a few moments where my normally skeptical non-collector life partner drops her guard and just bloody loves what she’s seeing. I think this could be the episode that shatters her cred.

And as a bonus, there’s an angry Prussian!

You can subscribe to the audio podcast via the major platforms (and let me know if it’s not on the platform of your choice). If you do listen to the podcast rather than watch it, there’s a note for you below.

However, the stats are showing that most of you prefer to watch the video version, so you can do that right here!

Whichever way you enjoy Stamps Aren’t Cool, thanks for your support, and I hope you enjoy Episode 5.

A note to audio podcast listeners
The original inspiration for this project was for it to be an audio podcast. The video idea came later. Of course, it’s handy to give you somewhere to see what we’re talking about, and that’s where this blog comes in. For previous episodes, the companion page at this blog has illustrated all the stamps mentioned in the podcast. Now that we’re a few episodes in, and I’ve learned how much work is involved, I need to find a few ways to make this thing sustainable! So, for future episodes, where we are talking about just a few stamps, I’ll still post them here. But for monster episodes like Ep 5 here, I’m going to hope you will be content to click into the YouTube clip and see the stamps there. No need to watch the whole podcast through again! Click through to YouTube via the logo at bottom right of the video above. In the descriptive panel just beneath the video, click ‘More’. This will reveal a list of timecoded chapters. You can click straight into the stuff you want to see. Thanks for your understanding! – PP

  1. You mentioned in one podcast that there are a lot of stamp dealers in France.

There are two reasons you often see for why stamp collecting isn’t popular. 1) with the Internet nobody sends paper mail with stamps. 2) there have been decades of junk stamps made mostly to get money from collectors.

I would think those reasons apply to France just as much as the US. So why is stamp collecting still popular enough in France to support many dealers?

    1. Good point Ken! My guess would be (a) a large population in a smaller area, leading to a greater concentration of collectors, and (b) Paris, being a cultural hub both for Europe and the world, is not reliant solely on interest from within one country, focused chiefly on that country’s stamps (which I imagine is the case in most other nations). Thanks for watching!
